Summary
Understanding the role of aquatic biota and the impact of pollution and chemical substances that enter aquatic ecosystems is crucial to the assessment, prevention, and remediation of damaged environments. ‘Biological Effects of Surfactants’ synthesizes the most important findings from hundreds of articles and the author's current experiments on the biological effects of synthetic surfactants and detergents on individual organisms, populations, communities, and ecosystems. This book offers a new perspective of the hazards of pollution.
The book draws upon concepts in hydrobiology, biogeochemical cycling, and the assimilative capacity of water-beyond the self-purification capabilities of bacteria and nutrient cycling-to examine the effects of anionic, non-ionic, and cationic surfactants as well as detergent mixtures on a wide range of organisms including bacteria, cyanobacteria, flagellates, algae, higher plants, and invertebrates. The author, a distinguished member of the RussianAcademy of Natural Sciences, establishes new quantitative characteristics of the effects and presents study results reflecting newly discovered phenomena. While proposing and substantiating new priorities and approaches for testing, assessing, and characterizing the biological activities and hazards of substances, he illustrates how the data obtained can be used to develop effective environmental remediation and protection measures to improve water quality.
Biological Effects of Surfactants lays an excellent foundation for scientists to explore how hazardous wastes are absorbed in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, determine what is required for remediation and restoring water quality, and design the best approach to counteract the toxic effects of manmade surfactants using biological methods, including phytoremediation.

Using plants in ecological and environmental studies:
List of publications, S.A. Ostroumov (updated June, 2010); the publications included material on plants; http://www.researchgate.net/profile/Sergei_Ostroumov/blog/2261_plants_ecological_environmental_studies;
In some of the papers, new data on phytotoxicity of chemicals, especially synthetic detergents and surfactants, were reported. Some paper contains new data on the phytoremediation potential of aquatic plants in the systems where the water was polluted with surfactants, detergents, heavy metal, and perchlorate.
Some of the publications (e.g., the book ‘Conservation of Living Nature and Resources: Problems, Trends, Prospects’) cover the issues of conservation of biodiversity including plants. The book ‘Introduction to Biochemical Ecology’ includes the data on the secondary metabolites produced by plants, and analyses the ecological functions of those natural chemicals. The book ‘Aquatic Organisms in Water Self-Purification and Biogenic Migration of Elements’ and some other books and papers (e.g. the paper ‘On the biotic self-purification of aquatic ecosystems: elements of the theory’. - Doklady Biological Sciences, V. 396, 2004, p. 206–211) gave the innovative theory of the polyfunctional role of biota (including plants) in maintaining and improving water quality.
Key words include: plants, phytoremediation, phytotechnology, aquatic plants, phytotoxicity, phytomass, phytotest, plant seedlings, phytoplankton, and others;
New concept: Ecological chemomediators 409 за 24 часа
Sergei Ostroumov–
Earlier, the author published two books (including 'Introduction to Biochemical Ecology', Moscow University Press, 1986) and some papers, in which he described the conceptual foundations of a new scientific discipline — biochemical ecology. The lines of research on biochemical ecology included studies of the role of chemical substances in interorganismal interactions, in communication and regulation of supraorganismal systems.
Another part of biochemical ecology concerns studies of the fate and transformation of external chemical substances when they interact with the organisms. Both natural and man-made compounds are within the focus of biochemical ecology. The basic concepts of biochemical ecology include two concepts and terms that were suggested by the author, namely ecological chemomediators and ecological chemoregulators. They were suggested by S.A.Ostroumov and since then, they have already been included accepted as part of modern ecological concepts and are used in modern ecological literature. Application of biochemical ecology to aquatic ecosystems creates the basis for development of biochemical hydrobiology.
