Valery Gurov and Telman Karimbaev, Drs. Sc. (Eng.) from the Central Institute of Aircraft Engine Building named after P. Baranov (Moscow), and Alexander Shabarov, Dr. Sc. (Eng.) from the Tyumen State University, tell us their own story on the development and testing of ground wind-driven machines with horizontal and vertical rotation axis of the wind wheel and a capacity up to 1kW in the article "New Potentialities of Wind-Driven Machines" (Energiya magazine, No. 5, 2010) we are going to speak about below.

Field trials show: the diffuser and other components of wind-driven machines manufactured of light high-strength composite materials, a special generator used and some other works carried out, made it possible to design an appropriate portable machine weighing up to 90 kg with a capacity of 1-1.2 kW, easily installed in the field or similar conditions. The Tyumen University was the first to design and test similar machines with a flow channel in the form of a ring-shaped guiding device (stator) and a profiled rotor wheel.

Today, the authors of a joint invention emphasize: wind-driven machines with the vertical rotor axis are more interesting as one of the main shortcomings of the already known structures with horizontal rotation axis is a necessity of orientation of their wind wheels in the direction of an air flow.

Further, the inventors speculate on the possibilities of improvement of the primary element of a wind-driven machine, designed to generate electricity. Unfortunately, today we have no highly capacious and cheap electric accumulators, which makes it difficult to solve the problem of noncoincidence in phase changes of wind potential and quantity of energy consumed in using appropriate devices. The scientists believe that compressed air should be produced by air compressors, not by electric generators connected to power-driven machines.

In general, Moscow and Tyumen scientists point out the following advantages of the system under consider-

General view of the wind-driven machine with a diffuser (capacity up to 1 kW): 1-wind wheel with blades and a generator; 2-revolving diffuser; 3-compartment for a stand; 4-tightening device.

Wind-driven power system: 1-wind-driven machine; 2-compressor; 3-power unit; 4-accumulator of compressed air; 5-turbine; 6-generator; 7-ejector; 8-consumerofwarm air; 9-heat exchanger; 10-consumer of cold air.

ation: it can be mounted in a short period of time at low cost due to use of already available elements–air turbine ejectors, compressed air tank, worked out structures of wind-driven machines. As for a complete set of the power center, it depends on the technical requirements and financial resources of the customer.

According to the estimates, if the aggregate power of a wind-driven machine is 5 kW, it can produce 1 kW of electricity, 1 kW of cold and up to 2.5 kW of heat, given the normal temperature of the environment, i.e., the indicated initial capacity can be achieved using 5 wind-driven systems producing 1kW of energy each.

So, unlike known and widely used models* of wind-driven machines, newly designed systems can operate without intricate accumulators allowing to store energy produced by wind in case of reduction of its consumption; besides, they do not require universal frequency-to-current converters with standard values of 50 Hz.

The authors pointed out that the proposed system and its elements passed a state expert examination related to novelty and possibility of industrial production. All this is fixed by a number of patents for inventions and useful models.
